The ammonium (NH₄⁺) in ammonium nitrate is converted by soil bacteria into nitrate (NO₃⁻) through a process called nitrification. This process releases hydrogen ions (H⁺) into the soil, which can lower the pH over time, making the soil more acidic.

However, the overall effect on soil pH is close to neutral. Constant use of nitrate-N-based fertilizers can increase soil or substrate pH. In contrast, ammonium-N-based fertilizers, such as nitrogen solutions are used to maintain pH in the desirable slightly acidic range.
